CitraZoy: The Florida-Bred Zoysia Built to Carry One Property Front-to-Back.

Most Central Florida estates do not have one sun condition. The front lawn faces south and runs full sun from ten a.m. through six p.m. The side yard sits under a thirty-year-old live oak that throws three to four hours of direct light onto the turf. The backyard catches partial sun through filtered canopy. Under conventional Zoysia logic the homeowner picks Empire for the front lawn — and watches the side yard and the backyard thin out by year three because Empire is sun-preferred. Or the homeowner picks CitraBlue Zoysia for shade tolerance — and loses density on the front lawn where the cultivar gets more sun than it was bred for. The conventional answer is two cultivars across a transition line, which holds aesthetically only when the transition is hidden by a deliberate landscape break.

CitraZoy was bred to solve that problem. It is a Florida-developed Zoysia release that holds clean canopy density across three to eight hours of direct daily light — the widest sun-tolerance window of any Zoysia cultivar Yard Works installs. The blade is fine-to-medium (closer to Empire than to Zeon), the recovery rate from foot and pet traffic is the fastest in the Zoysia family, and the cultivar holds a clean reel cut between 0.5 and 1.25 inches for properties on a premium reel program. CitraZoy installs run $2.15 per square foot across the Yard Works service area — Oviedo, Winter Park, Winter Springs, Maitland, College Park, Lake Mary, Sanford, Lake Nona — with the agronomic framework drawn from UF/IFAS Extension turfgrass guidance and the install record of every Yard Works CitraZoy project since the cultivar's commercial release.

01 — Foundation

Why CitraZoy Performs Where Empire and Zeon Begin to Struggle.

The breeding history matters because it explains the agronomic edges. Empire was selected for sun-tolerant density and a clean rotary finish — and it carries those traits as well as any Zoysia in Florida. The trade-off is that Empire's photosynthetic efficiency falls off below five hours of direct daily light, and a side yard under mature canopy gradually loses density across the second and third summers. Zeon was selected for the finest blade in the Zoysia family and the cleanest reel cut — and it holds the championship-style finish that no other Zoysia matches. The trade-off is that Zeon is the most sun-preferred cultivar in the family; it thins faster than Empire in any meaningful shade, and the care floor for Zeon's finish is the highest in the residential turf market. CitraZoy was bred explicitly to widen the sun-tolerance window without sacrificing the reel-cut compatibility — the breeding objective was the cultivar that holds clean density at four hours of direct light, recovers from foot traffic at the rate Empire and Zeon do not, and still delivers a finish a Yard Works client would put their name behind.

The agronomic result on a Yard Works property is visible. CitraZoy installed in 2024 on a 6,800-square-foot Winter Park property — full sun front, mature live oak canopy on the south side, partial sun back — read as a single uniform stand at the eighteen-month mark. The same property in an Empire scenario would have shown visible thinning along the canopy edge by the second August. The same property in a Zeon scenario would have thinned in the same place and pulled density on the higher-traffic backyard zone where the kids' play structure sits. CitraZoy held both zones because the cultivar was bred for both zones — and because the maintenance program ran on the agronomic correct cadence underneath it.

02 — Science

CitraZoy by the Numbers — What the Cultivar Actually Holds.

Per UF/IFAS Extension turfgrass guidance and the Yard Works install record across Zone 9b, the table below captures the agronomic specifications that drive a CitraZoy install. Mow heights, irrigation expectations, fertility windows, and pricing are presented in the same form Yard Works uses on the on-site walk.

SpecCitraZoy ValueNotes

Nitrogen demand2–4 lb N / 1,000 sqft / yrSplit across 4–5 applications per UF/IFAS Zone 9b guidance — no high-phosphorus blends
Installed price$2.15 / sqftPallet = 400 sqft · standard 5% overage on cut waste · fully installed

A 5,000-square-foot CitraZoy install runs $10,000–$11,000 depending on access, removal scope, and irrigation reconfiguration. A 7,500-square-foot install runs $16,000–$17,500. The agronomic specs above hold across the install — the cultivar performs the same in Oviedo as in Winter Park as in Lake Mary as long as the soil, sun, and irrigation are set up correctly at install.

Zone 9b · CitraZoy Use Cases

Eight Properties Where CitraZoy Is the Cultivar of Choice.

CitraZoy fits a specific set of Central Florida property profiles. The grid below covers the eight use cases where Yard Works regularly recommends CitraZoy on the on-site walk.

Mixed Sun · Front-to-Back

One Cultivar for Whole Property

Front lawn full sun + side yard partial canopy + backyard filtered shade. CitraZoy holds all three zones without the transition seam that two cultivars require.

Live Oak Canopy

Mature Tree Shade

Properties with 30-year-plus live oak or laurel oak throwing 3–4 hours direct light. CitraZoy holds density where Empire and Zeon thin by year three.

High-Traffic Family

Kids and Pets

Wear pattern from kids, pets, and outdoor entertaining. CitraZoy's bred-in recovery rate keeps the lawn whole where Zeon would show wear scars.

Reel-Cut Program

Premium Reel Finish

Twice-weekly reel cut at 0.5–1.25 inches. CitraZoy holds the scissor-cut finish without the full-sun-only constraint that Zeon imposes.

Cultivar Conversion

Replacing Old St. Augustine

Replacing a 15-year-old Floratam stand that has lost density. CitraZoy delivers the upgrade in finish without the full-sun requirement of Empire.

HOA / Property Mgmt

Approval-Friendly Look

HOA review boards approving "Zoysia" or "fine-blade turf" without specifying cultivar. CitraZoy's mid-blade reads as Zoysia at the curb without the maintenance posture Zeon requires.

Backyard Pool Surround

Pool-Deck Adjacency

Pool surround where the lawn meets the deck and the homeowner wants Zoysia density that recovers from pool-party traffic without scarring.

Estate Replacement

Full-Property Re-Install

10,000-plus sqft estate replacements where the homeowner wants premium Zoysia and the property has mixed sun across the install footprint.

The Cultivar Holds the Cut. The Program Holds the Cultivar.

The Yard Works CitraZoy Install Program

How We Install CitraZoy on a Central Florida Estate.

Every CitraZoy install runs the same eight steps. The steps don't change with cultivar — but the cultivar selection is the first step, and the on-site walk is where the cultivar decision actually happens.

01

Property Walk & CitraZoy Confirmation

Michael walks the property, measures sun exposure hour-by-hour across all zones, confirms CitraZoy is the right cultivar (vs. Empire, Zeon, or a multi-cultivar split), and identifies any zone that needs a different solution.

02

Written Quote & Schedule

Square footage, pallet count, CitraZoy line items at $2.15/sqft, soil amendment scope, irrigation reconfiguration scope, install date — all documented and emailed before sod leaves the grower.

03

Grade Prep & Soil Amendment

Existing turf killed and removed. Subgrade leveled. Compost or sand-compost blend tilled into the top 2–4 inches per the soil test result. Final grade verified before any sod arrives.

04

Pallet Delivery from Certified Grower

CitraZoy pallets delivered the morning of install from the certified Central Florida grower. Pallets staged for the laying pattern, kept shaded and watered. Same-day install — never overnight on a pallet in Florida summer.

05

Cut & Lay (Brick Pattern)

CitraZoy laid in a brick-pattern offset starting from the longest straight edge of the property. Cut seams kept tight, joints staggered, edges trimmed clean to all bed lines, hardscape edges, and irrigation heads.

06

Roll & First-Week Irrigation

Lawn rolled to maximize soil-to-sod contact. Irrigation set to the first-week schedule — typically 15–20 min per zone, 2–3x daily for 14 days — verified head-by-head by Michael before the crew leaves the property.

07

30-Day Establishment Walk

Michael returns at 30 days for an on-site walk — tug-test for root knit-down, cut-seam check, fertility assessment, irrigation re-calibration, first-mow timing confirmation. Any issue caught here, not later.

08

Handoff to Maintenance

CitraZoy lawn handed to the year-round Yard Works maintenance program — cultivar logged, mow height set (1.5–2.5 in rotary, 0.5–1.25 in reel), cadence set, fertility plan documented, reel eligibility confirmed.

03 — Refinement

Why CitraZoy Pairs Directly With Reel Mowing, Topdressing, and Year-Round Maintenance.

A CitraZoy install commits the property to a specific maintenance posture, and the post-install programs determine whether the cultivar holds its finish for fifteen years or thins out in year three. The first pairing is reel mowing — CitraZoy holds a clean reel cut between 0.5 and 1.25 inches, and the reel program drives the lateral density that distinguishes premium Zoysia from a mowed-with-anything Zoysia. The second pairing is topdressing — annual sand-and-compost topdressing on a CitraZoy program levels surface variance, dilutes thatch buildup that the slower Zoysia growth rate accumulates, and raises organic matter in the root zone. The third pairing is year-round maintenance — predictable cadence, cultivar-correct mow height, bed work, hedge work, and the quarterly agronomic review that catches fertility or pest issues before they become visible problems.

Underneath all three pairings is the fertility program. A CitraZoy-specific lawn care & fertilization program — split across four to five applications per year at 2–4 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sqft, no high-phosphorus blends per the Florida fertilizer rule — keeps the cultivar in the canopy density window the homeowner committed to at install. CitraZoy underneath the right program reads as estate-grade for the long horizon. CitraZoy underneath a budget program loses the recovery rate that justified the cultivar selection in the first place.

Answers You'd Ask on the Walk

CitraZoy Sod Installation — Common Questions.

What is CitraZoy Zoysia and why is Yard Works installing it in Central Florida?

CitraZoy is a Florida-bred Zoysia cultivar released through University of Florida turfgrass research to address the gap between Empire (sun-preferred workhorse) and CitraBlue Zoysia (shade-tolerant color carrier). CitraZoy holds a clean canopy from three to eight hours of direct daily light, recovers faster from foot and pet traffic than Empire, holds a reel cut between 0.5 and 1.25 inches, and carries a fine-to-medium blade that delivers the Zoysia finish on mixed-sun properties where Empire would thin in shade and CitraBlue would lose density in full sun. For a Central Florida estate with mature canopy on one side and full sun on the other, CitraZoy is often the cultivar that allows one Zoysia install front-to-back instead of two cultivars across a transition line.

How much does CitraZoy Zoysia sod cost installed in Oviedo or Winter Park?

Yard Works installs CitraZoy Zoysia at $2.15 per square foot, fully installed. The price covers grade prep, soil amendment per the on-site assessment, pallet purchase from the certified CitraZoy grower, cut and lay, rolling, first-week irrigation schedule, and the 30-day establishment walk. Pallets are 400 square feet plus a standard 5% overage to account for cut waste. A 5,000-square-foot CitraZoy install runs in the $10,000 to $11,000 range; a 7,500-square-foot install runs $16,000 to $17,500 depending on access, removal scope, and irrigation reconfiguration. Every estimate is on-site and written.

Can CitraZoy be reel-mowed?

Yes. CitraZoy holds a clean reel cut between 0.5 and 1.25 inches and is one of the four Zoysia cultivars Yard Works runs on the reel-mow program (along with Empire, Zeon, and Trinity). A reel-cut CitraZoy lawn delivers the alternating stripe finish associated with championship golf turf and drives a denser lateral canopy than the same cultivar on a rotary cut. The reel program runs at twice-weekly frequency in season and requires the deck to be re-calibrated at the start of every season. See the reel mowing program page for full equipment and cadence detail.

How much shade can CitraZoy tolerate in Central Florida?

CitraZoy holds reliable density at three to four hours of direct daily light — which puts it in range for properties with mature live oak, laurel oak, or magnolia canopy where Empire and Zeon would thin out by the second summer. Below three hours of direct light, no warm-season turf cultivar performs reliably long-term — that level of shade calls for a landscape solution (groundcover, mulch bed, shade-tolerant ornamental planting) rather than a turf install. Yard Works measures sun exposure hour-by-hour during the property walk and identifies any zone where CitraZoy is not the right answer before the install is quoted.

How long does CitraZoy take to establish after installation?

A properly installed CitraZoy lawn knits down to the soil in 7 to 10 days under the first-week irrigation schedule, fills the cut seams visually in 21 to 30 days, and reads as a single uniform stand at the 60-to-90-day mark. First mow is at day 10 to 14 once the lawn passes the tug-test. CitraZoy carries a faster establishment profile than Zeon and a comparable profile to Empire — the breeding objective explicitly prioritized recovery rate. Foot traffic should stay light through day 21. The 30-day establishment walk catches any cut-seam separation, irrigation gap, or fertility deficiency before the lawn enters the year-round maintenance program.

What's the right mow height for CitraZoy?

Per UF/IFAS guidance and the Yard Works install record, CitraZoy holds cleanly at 1.5 to 2.5 inches on a sharp rotary cut and 0.5 to 1.25 inches on a reel program. The upper end of each range applies in summer and in shaded zones; the lower end applies in spring and fall on the sunniest sections. Cutting CitraZoy below the recommended range exposes the crown, burns the lower blade, and reduces drought tolerance through the next heat event. The one-third rule applies — never remove more than one-third of the standing blade in a single cut — which sets the visit cadence at weekly on rotary and twice-weekly on reel during the active growing season.

What kind of irrigation does CitraZoy need?

CitraZoy establishes on the standard Yard Works first-week irrigation schedule — typically 15 to 20 minutes per zone, 2 to 3 times daily, for the first 14 days. After establishment, CitraZoy holds on the standard Zone 9b deep-and-infrequent watering pattern — typically 3/4 to 1 inch of water per week, applied in 1 to 2 cycles, scheduled per the EST Florida irrigation rules. Cycle-and-soak programming is the correct approach on any Central Florida soil that runs off in a single zone — the irrigation walk during the install identifies whether the existing system needs reconfiguration. See the irrigation services page for system upgrades that pair with a CitraZoy install.

Where in Central Florida does Yard Works install CitraZoy?

Yard Works installs CitraZoy across the full Yard Works service area — Oviedo, Winter Park, Winter Springs, Maitland, College Park, Lake Mary, Sanford, and Lake Nona. The cultivar is delivered from the certified Central Florida CitraZoy grower the morning of install and staged on the property for same-day cut and lay. Sod does not sit overnight on a pallet in Florida summer. The install schedule books two to four weeks out depending on season — spring and fall windows fill fastest.
