Reel Mowing
Done Right
Scissor-cut precision at the correct blade height for Zoysia and St. Augustine. The difference between a lawn and a showpiece is in the cut.
The Cut That Makes
Golf Courses Great
A rotary mower tears the grass blade. A reel mower slices it cleanly — the same scissor action used on Augusta National, Pebble Beach, and every championship course in the world. That clean cut is what gives premium Zoysia and St. Augustine lawns their color, density, and that unmistakable stripe definition.
In Zone 9b's heat and humidity, a clean cut also reduces disease pressure. Torn blades create entry points for fungus. Sliced blades heal cleanly and maintain apical dominance — the turf's natural mechanism for horizontal spread and thatch suppression.
- Correct mowing heights for Zoysia (.5"–1") and St. Augustine (2.5"–4")
- Scissor-cut action eliminates tearing, browning, and disease entry
- Directional striping on every visit — consistent pattern definition
- Sharp blade verification before every property — no torn cuts
- Clippings mulched back for natural nitrogen cycling
- Complements topdressing and verticutting programs
What Happens on
Every Visit
Blade Inspection
We verify blade sharpness before every property. A dull reel mower is worse than a sharp rotary — we never let a client's lawn find that out.
Height Verification
We confirm mowing height is set correctly for your specific turf variety. Zoysia at .5"–.75", St. Augustine never below 3" in stress periods.
Directional Striping
Every cut is directional. We rotate stripe patterns on alternate visits to prevent grain and promote consistent upright growth across the entire lawn surface.
Edge & Clean
String edging along all hard surfaces, stick edging along beds. Zero clippings left on pavers, driveways, or planted beds. The property looks finished, not just mowed.
Not Every Turf
Cuts the Same
Zoysia — Empire, Zeon, and ProVista — is the gold standard for reel-mowed estate lawns in Central Florida. Its fine blade, dense growth, and heat tolerance make it ideal for the sub-1" mowing heights that produce the visual impact our clients expect.
St. Augustine, properly managed with a reel mower, maintains far better color and density than rotary-maintained turf. The key is correct height, consistent schedule, and never scalping during drought stress.
- Empire Zoysia — wide blade, excellent shade tolerance
- Zeon Zoysia — fine blade, premium density, superior color
- ProVista St. Augustine — low-input, herbicide-tolerant
- Floratam St. Augustine — warm, full-sun residential standard
