Wondering whether Geo or Zeon is the right fine zoysia for your lawn? We’ll tell you honestly.

Geo is a fine-textured Zoysia matrella cultivar — bred by Bladerunner Farms, the same Texas breeder behind Zeon, and known for the deepest blue-green color of the zoysias, a slightly more upright growth habit, and strong salt and shade tolerance. It holds a dense, manicured lawn, takes a low reel cut around 0.75 to 1.25 inches for a fairway finish, and installs at $2.15 per square foot. It is the zoysia we reach for when an estate owner wants the darkest color and a fine finish that stands up well.

“Geo is the zoysia I put down when a client wants that deep, almost blue-green estate color and a fine fairway finish. It stands a little more upright than Zeon, so it takes a cut beautifully — and it shrugs off salt and light shade that would thin a lesser grass.”

— Michael Geist, Yard Works · UGA-certified in warm-season turfgrass management

What Geo Actually Is

A fine Zoysia matrella from Bladerunner Farms. Geo comes from the same breeding program as Zeon, but it was selected for its exceptionally dark blue-green color and a more upright leaf — a fine matrella built to look manicured and hold that color through the season.

Salt- and shade-tolerant. Geo carries some of the best salt tolerance among lawn zoysias and takes filtered shade well for a fine cultivar — a genuine edge on lawns with tree cover or coastal exposure where a full-sun grass struggles.

Dense, upright, and fairway-ready. Its upright habit means it stands up to the mower and takes a low reel cut cleanly, building the tight, uniform canopy that reads as an estate lawn.

Our Zoysia Cultivar Library

Geo vs. Zeon vs. CitraZoy vs. Empire

Zeon is the softest, finest matrella — the classic reel-cut fairway zoysia near 0.75 inch, prized for its feel and true shade tolerance. Geo is its sibling matrella, trading a touch of Zeon’s softness for a darker color, a more upright stand, and stronger salt tolerance.

CitraZoy is our estate flagship — a certified hybrid japonica with excellent density and the winter color retention we’ve documented first-hand, mowed around 1.0 inch. Empire is the value japonica workhorse for open full sun, forgiving under a rotary at about 1.25 inch.

Our honest read: choose Geo when you want the deepest color, a fine upright finish, and salt or light-shade tolerance; choose Zeon for the softest feel and the finest true fairway look; choose CitraZoy for a hybrid estate front lawn; choose Empire for value in full sun.

Where Geo Is the Right Call — and Where It Isn’t

We match the grass to the property. Geo is the answer on the right lawn, but not every lawn.

Geo is the right call when you want the deepest blue-green color of the zoysias, a fine reel-cut finish that stands up well, or a grass that holds up to salt exposure and filtered shade better than most — think tree-shaded estate lawns or properties near brackish water.

Choose another cultivar when you want the very softest underfoot feel — Zeon leads there; when full sun and simple rotary maintenance are the goal — Empire or a japonica fits better; or when winter color retention on a full-sun front lawn is the priority — CitraZoy is our documented pick.

Healthy lawns and landscapes do not exist without healthy living soil. Whatever the cultivar, we grade and prep first — a fine matrella like Geo only reaches its dense, dark potential in soil that lets it root and feed.

Geo Zoysia Questions, Answered

Is Geo zoysia good for a Florida lawn?

Yes — Geo is a strong choice for a Central Florida estate lawn. As a fine Zoysia matrella from Bladerunner Farms, it builds a dense, manicured canopy, keeps the deepest blue-green color of the zoysias, and tolerates salt and filtered shade better than most lawn grasses. It takes a low reel cut for a true fairway finish, which makes it a natural fit for owners who want a premium, color-rich lawn.

How much does Geo zoysia sod cost installed?

We install premium zoysia, including Geo, at $2.15 per square foot installed, with a one-pallet minimum of about 400 square feet. That price includes the site prep and grading that make a fine matrella look right — the cultivar step-up over another zoysia is small next to the prep. For an exact number on your property, call (407) 687-3322.

What’s the difference between Geo and Zeon zoysia?

Both are fine Zoysia matrella cultivars from the same Bladerunner Farms breeding program, so they share the tight, reel-cut fairway character. Geo was selected for a darker blue-green color, a slightly more upright leaf, and strong salt tolerance. Zeon is the softest and finest underfoot and leads in true shade. On many lawns the choice comes down to whether you prioritize Geo’s deep color and salt tolerance or Zeon’s softness — and we’ll advise honestly.

Does Geo zoysia handle shade and salt?

Geo takes filtered shade well for a fine zoysia and carries excellent salt tolerance — two real edges. It holds in lighter light than a full-sun grass, and shrugs off salt exposure that would thin many lawns, making it a good pick for tree-shaded or coastal-influenced properties. No zoysia is a true deep-shade grass, though; if a spot gets less than roughly four to five hours of good sun, we’ll tell you honestly before we install.

Do you have to reel-mow Geo zoysia?

Geo is at its best reel-cut low, around 0.75 to 1.25 inches, which is where it delivers the tight fairway finish it’s known for. Its upright habit means it stands up to the mower cleanly. You can maintain it a touch taller with a sharp rotary, but if you want that manicured estate look, a reel cut is the way — and reel mowing is a service we specialize in.

How often do you water new Geo sod?

Keep new sod consistently moist for the first one to two weeks, then taper toward a deeper, less frequent schedule as the roots knit in. Water in the early morning, never at night which invites fungus, and once established follow the one-third rule when mowing so you never remove more than a third of the blade at once. We leave every client a cultivar-specific establishment schedule for their Geo lawn.

Thinking About a Geo Lawn?

We’ll walk the property, read the light, the soil, and your color and salt situation, and tell you whether Geo is the right zoysia for it — or whether Zeon, CitraZoy, or Empire will serve you better for the same money.
